Book Review: The House In The Olive Grove by Emma Cowell

After a traumatic series of events in New York, chef Maria returns to her birthplace in Greece and starts a cooking school/retreat at her home. Her first guests are Kayla from England and Alessandra from Italy, both there to escape their own troubles for a while.

I love books that transport me to far-off places and this didn’t disappoint with its luscious descriptions of the seaside village setting on mainland Greece. I felt like I was there myself, soaking up the warm honey-scented air and sinking my toes into the soft sand on the beach. And, as the story is set in a cookery school, there were plenty of mouth-watering food descriptions to tantalise my tastebuds.

Whilst this book is mostly about friendship, healing and fresh beginnings, it also has an element of mystery to heighten the pace. Someone clearly wants Maria gone and is going to extreme lengths to scare her into packing up and leaving.

The three main characters, Maria, Kayla and Alessandra, are very different people, each with their secrets. Yet they all share the same inner strength, a strength that helps them confront their past to free them to move forward. It was at times a very emotional read but overall an uplifting book.

I’d recommend this book.
